TinyVox

Launched as a social media audio app, TinyVox allows users to record, store, listen and share MP3 audio files via email, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and SoundCloud. We designed the retro infinite tape deck with a custom dropbox platform, hoping it’ll be the next big thing in social media.

Developing the Twitpic of audio letting users share audio files they record on their smart phones

LA-based punk-rock purveyor Srini Kumar came to Doejo in early summer 2010 with an innovative app-based social media concept. The idea was to create digitally recorded sound bites, transform them into MP3s and quickly launch them via email, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and now SoundCloud. Think of it as an audio version of Twitpic.

In November 2010, Doejo launched TinyVox as a completely customized iOS platform with a retro spinning tape deck aesthetic, geared towards social media savvy users recording lectures, meetings, brainstorming notes and even mini Podcasts for blogs. The hipster, college student market inspired the app’s self-referential interface.

In addition to creating an informative website promoting the app, Doejo built a custom dropbox storage platform to send and receive “voxes” in two sound qualities: regular, which records up to 22 minutes, and high, which records up to 12 minutes of sound. The app also holds an infinite tape deck of these MP3s to share or listen to at your leisure. Cost of the app is free (with ads) with a “pro” version available at around $1- $5 (without ads and alternative mic and level meter).

Currently, TinyVox has about 100 new downloads a day with about 6,700 users to date. And in the spirit of digitally recorded social media, here’s Kumar on why he came to Doejo to develop TinyVox, recorded using his app.

In October 2011, Kumar came back to Doejo to launch an app into the Android Market with a free and pro version.

Critics praise the form and function of TinyVox. So says blog, Design.org: “The user interface of the recording tool app is awesome and easy to navigate … it's fun and useful in that you can record both important notes and social messages.” AppAdvice.com says “TinyVox’s versatility is enhanced by its remarkable interface, which looks like an old tape recorder … nothing compares to this.”

[At] Doejo you’re really hiring a team of inventors… Doejo really looks at what they see as the users’ best interest as far as creating some kind of experience the user values and therefore will associate with who you are. … Finding Doejo had nothing less than a miraculous impact on the existence of the app TinyVox that I am so excited about.
